Surely you know from experience that life brings a host of changes and tasks, and that ready-made solutions are not always at hand. But we can make it our aim, throughout life, this long journey, always to strive to give authentic, fitting answers.
For this we must seek out the points and ideals in life that are constant, or at least lasting in the long run. The wise say: ‘Spiritual development is not a theory from books gathering dust on the shelf, nor some legend from many thousands of years ago that no longer holds today. No, the truths of the spiritual life are eternal truths. God does not change his mind. Truth is truth, knowledge is knowledge, love is love. These are the three pillars of spiritual development.’
I ask you, do not look at yourselves in the mirror of false self-esteem! In the trap of the ego, favourable qualities turn into their opposite. Regard the opportunities before you as a calling, a task; surely it is not by chance, nor as an end in itself, that the Lord has bestowed talents upon you, but so that, bathing them in the light of devotion, you may turn them to the benefit of others. Always seek out and honour the divine qualities in one another!
If in this way, supporting and completing one another, trust always reigns among you, then the strength of the community will be unbreakable, and the individual and shared responsibility you take on by voluntary, free choice and in divine commitment will radiate out to others too.
Be the invisible hand behind every good deed, be the invisible mind behind every pure and exalted spiritual plan, be the invisible backbone in every hard struggle for truth, be the invisible heart whose power of feeling inspires others too, be the invisible force, the life-essence springing from devotion, that keeps others too in motion and brings them closer to divine harmony. Life is a bridge on which we build no palace, but over which we pass, and yet we strive to preserve the holiness and safety of the bridge. What matters most is to foster an atmosphere of trust, which must be won, must be earned. And do not forget, in an atmosphere of trust good qualities multiply and bad ones fade away, while mistrust undermines even success.
Always make responsible decisions, strive to make everything around you work well, in keeping with divine harmony. This calls for ever greater responsibility from all who take part, so that they understand and feel what you are doing and why, can contribute to it creatively, and become active, engaged partners in bringing it about as well. Bad practice, false conditioning, fear or ignorance, groundless dogmas or the sway of power must not hinder you from carrying out your pure tasks, consciously taken up, understood and felt, and your agreed plans. Give everyone the freedom to create, to confer, to make the sacrifices undertaken to carry out the common aims.
What must be avoided above all is mistrust, intrigue and a negative attitude. Let the spirit of the community rest on the open exchange of ideas, and let there always be an aim so exalted that anyone can grasp it with the mind and feel it with the heart, and anyone will gladly make sacrifices for it through devotion. Cast off the spirit of exploitation, and through service to one another overcome the falseness and the urge to dominate that are inborn in man. Most people are driven by basic incentives: success, influence, power, money, material or moral incentives, profit, competition, but shed these and compete in service. Take care that keeping up outward form does not consume devotion, and so hide the essence. Concentrate on what is bathed in living spiritual light and seems ever more important.
